Today communication systems are used to a large extent for media consumption. The transmission of media like video requires high continuous data rates. This poses two challenges to communication systems:

  1. Highly efficient transmission
  2. Uninterrupted transmission

Multimedia delivery techniques aim to overcome these challenges. Content can be transmitted more efficiently by using broadcast instead of unicast transmission. By combining broadcast and unicast the advantages of both can be maintained. ABR (Adaptive Bit Rate) multicast uses broadcast transmission for delivering basic content to many users and unicast transmission for providing additional or enhancing content to select users.

Wireless communication systems are inherently unreliable leading to interruptions of high data rate connections. Interruptions of media streams under poor wireless channel conditions can be avoided by lower data rates. DASH (Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP) automatically adapts media data rates to channel conditions by sending adaptation feedback information from end devices to media delivery points.

Nomor experts have been shaping DASH and ABR multicast standards since their inception. They have been and are attending the MPEG (Moving Picture Experts Group), 3GPP and the DASH-IF (DASH-Industry Forum). Nomor’s DASH validation software is well known in the industry and has been used by multiple vendors to test their products’ standards compliance.

Nomor software has been used for prototyping and demonstrating multimedia delivery technologies. Demonstrations even have been combined with Nomor’s wireless cellular system simulations to evaluate multimedia delivery techniques in wireless network environments.

Nomor provides comprehensive services for multimedia delivery including prototyping and technology demonstrations, standardization services, consultancy services and patent work.

Completed projects include:

  • Active standardization at the MPEG (Moving Picture Experts Group), ATSC (Advanced Television Systems Committee), 3GPP and industry forums like DASH-IF (DASH-Industry Forum) and VR-IF (Virtual Reality-Industry Forum). Nomor experts helped shaping DASH and ABR multicast standards since their inception.
