Nomor Research to develop cross-layer optimized solutions for 5G multicast/broadcast as part of the 5G-Xcast project

Munich, June 01, 2017 – Nomor Research, a leading company providing 4G and 5G related consultancy services, today announces its involvement in the 5G-Xcast project (Broadcast and Multicast Communication Enablers for the Fifth Generation of Wireless Systems).
5G-Xcast will devise, assess and demonstrate a conceptually novel and forward-looking 5G network architecture for large scale immersive media delivery.
The project objectives are:

  • Develop broadcast and multicast point to multipoint (PTM) capabilities for 5G considering M&E, automotive, IoT and PWS use cases, and evaluate 5G spectrum allocation options for 5G Broadcast network deployments.
  • Design a dynamically adaptable 5G network architecture with layer independent network interfaces to dynamically and seamlessly switch between unicast, multicast and broadcast modes or use them in parallel and exploit built-in caching capabilities.
  • Experimentally demonstrate the 5G key innovations developed in the project for the M&E and PWS verticals.

Nomor pursues two research branches, one being centered on Radio Access Networks and the other being adaptive streaming of media content on application layer. In the 5G-Xcast project, Nomor intends to have close cooperation between its two quite disjoint areas of expertise to develop cross-layer optimized solutions for 5G multicast/broadcast. Thereby, they will continue on their path of system-level simulation and rapid prototyping that enable them to make well-informed design decisions by letting them evaluate algorithms and concepts in complex scenarios with full access to numerous key performance indicators at various layers of the communication system. Based on this, early software demos can be offered in order to visualize the progress of the work, while adaptations of hardware test-beds are still being implemented for investigations and demos towards the end of the project.
