3GPP is currently defining new radio access technologies for 5G cellular communications. This work is progressing fast and it is difficult to get a true understanding before the drafts of the specifications get more mature. Nevertheless, we hope this new white paper provides some more insight, as usual free of charge.
New 5G services (e.g. URLLC) and new features of 5G (e.g. support of cm- and mm-bands) require new frame structures. Differently to LTE, 5G frame structures provide a fixed and a flexible part. The new structures facilitate mixed numerologies including low latency operations. Based on the review of latest 3GPP documents, this paper describes and motivates the required new frame and slot structures defined for 5G.
